Fight - Flight - Freeze - How your body remembers trauma

February 25, 2017

Many of you will have heard of the fight and flight response though not everyone is aware of the freeze response.  We are animalistic creatures and when we think there is a threat of danger (real or imagined) our bodies naturally go into fight, flight or freeze response.

It was helpful to operate from a fight, flight and freeze response when we were cave men and women, as our lives depended on heightened senses.  We would either stay and fight or run from attack though if the fear is too great and if we weren’t able to run or fight, we would freeze instead (like a rabbit caught in the headlights of a car).  While in ‘freeze’ response we might pass out and disassociate from our bodies, we may also experience having no sensation of pain and sometimes no memory of the event at all.

You may find yourself going into fight, flight and freeze response daily, if you find yourself into situations which trigger you.  We can also trigger ourselves by thinking about the original event.  These responses release chemical and emotional reactions in the body which re-traumatise the system all over again, as if the original fear and threat to survival was actually happening.

Understanding how our past experiences and unresolved traumas influence our relationships with others as well as our emotional health and well-being will be time well spent.  Being aware of the past is helpful, living there isn't.

EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) helps to release the flight, fight, freeze response and in turn, will help you to transform traumatic emotions.  You can read more about this technique in Find YOU, Find LOVE and Mothers and Daughters: The guide to understanding and transforming the relationship with your mother along with The Spotlight Process, which will help you to work out where your thinking may be limited or stuck and will support you in releasing the energy of your original traumas and freeing you from negative beliefs about yourself and your relationships, in turn improving health and well-being at the deepest level.
